Antonelli: “I needed this win” in F2

FIA Formula 2’s newest race winner Andrea Kimi Antonelli says his Sprint Race win at Silverstone was one he really needed.

The Italian led all the 21 lap race, held in wet conditions, and saw a number of interruptions with a red flag and two Safety Car periods.

But the 17-year-old PREMA driver held his nerve to secure his first win from reverse-grid pole position.

“Super happy with this result,” he said, adding “I really needed it. It’s the first win in FIA Formula 2, and it’s a really special one because, with the changing conditions, it was really challenging to adapt.”

The teenager was faced with three rolling starts in wet conditions, but he managed each one supremely to give his rivals no chance of snatching away the lead.

“We had a lot of restarts, so I tried to change my strategy every time to surprise my competitors,” he revealed.

Antonelli had been expected to mount a title challenge, alongside teammate Oliver Bearman, but PREMA’s struggles with the new F2 car have hamstrung both drivers on the track.

But they now appear to be getting a handle on things and Antonelli praised the team following his win.

Antonelli said: “The team gave me a great car, and this is just the beginning. I need to work on a few things about myself, and we are trying to improve the car even more.”

The Mercedes Junior admitted the first half of 2024 hasn’t been what PREMA of he expected, but he feels they might have turned a corner.

He said: “We didn’t have the ideal start to the season, but we have been improving throughout the year. From Red Bull Ring, we made a big step, especially on race pace, and we keep moving forward.”
