Marcus Armstrong put in two strong race restarts, after the FIA Formula 2 Imola Sprint Race saw the launch of a Safety Car, and Virtual Safety Car, that followed two separate incidents.
When asked in the post-race Press Conference if he plans a possible restart beforehand, Armstrong said:
“Yes, I do think about it before a race.”
The Hitech driver added:
“I also saw Formula 3 this morning, and I know there’s a massive head wind down to Turn 1, so I wanted to try to get as much of a gap as possible before the straight.”
On the first restart, Armstrong was quick off the mark and pulled away with ease. However, the second restart was a lot closer, with PREMA driver, Jehan Daruvala, on his heals:
“I knew that Jehan can’t follow me closely in the last two corners, so naturally I wanted to go as early as possible, as long as I didn’t pass the Safety Car on the pit entry.”
At the end of the race Armstrong was heard saying over the team radio, that he wasn’t sure if they could hear him, before he stated a few words of celebration, for his first race win of the 2022 season:
“On the Virtual Safety Car restart, that was quite stressful because you need your engineer to tell you the Virtual Safety Car is ending, and be ready to go. And in this case I had no clue! So I was sitting in second gear ready to go. Luckily it went green when there was a TV above. Quite lucky.”
