Aron on Pole as Less Than a Tenth Separates the Top 4 in Barcelona Qualifying

Paul Aron claims pole position for the FIA Formula 2 Feature Race in Barcelona only 0.002 seconds ahead of Jak Crawford as Taylor Barnard crashes.

Championship leader, Aron set the initial pace in Barcelona with a 1:25.385, two tenths of a second ahead of MP Motorsport’s Dennis Hauger.

6 minutes into the session, the red flag came out to recover Barnard’s stricken AIX car at Turn 9. He got a snap of oversteer on the exit of the corner and found the barrier as a result.

The session resumed at 16:09 local time, most of the drivers were keen to get out onto the track after the stoppage since many laps were interrupted due to the red flag.

One of those drivers was Amaury Cordeel who struggled with his clutch in the pit lane.

With just over 15 minutes left, championship contender, Isack Hadjar went to the top of the timing sheets with a 1:25.205, a tenth of a second ahead of Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli.

The remaining drivers in the session started their final runs with 8 minutes to go. Cordeel’s problems in the pit lane seemed to have been resolved and he continued in Qualifying.

Aron set the fastest time of the session early on in the final runs to secure him pole position for the Feature Race on Sunday. A mistake from Franco Colapinto at the final corner of his fastest lap cost him the chance of pole and he will start third, 0.006 seconds off Aron and 0.004 off of Crawford in second.

Also within a tenth of a second, starting fourth is Brazilian driver, Gabriel Bortoleto ahead of Antonelli who rounds out the top 5.

Championship contender, Hadjar came on the radio to say he was struggling with tyre warm up and only managed to qualify 11th, and is under investigation for an unsafe release in the pit lane, involving Enzo Fittipaldi.

For Saturday’s Sprint Race, Invicta Racing’s Kush Maini starts on provisional reverse grid pole after qualifying 10th.
