Paul Aron topped practice in FIA Formula 2 at Imola ahead of McLaren Junior Gabriel Bortoleto.

The disrupted session saw Ollie Bearman clatter the wall at Tamburello, damaging his PREMA and bringing the session to an abrupt end.

British driver Zak O’Sullivan set the first lap time eight minutes into the session, 1:32.113, as he began to build tyre and brake temperature.

A flurry of cars quickly beat the Williams Junior’s time, including Roman Stanek, who set a 1:30.784.

Home hero Andrea Kimi Antonelli ran wide at Acque Minerali but returned to the circuit after damaging his PREMA after a trip through the gravel.

The Italian responded to go third fastest with just over half an hour remaining, two-tenths behind teammate and pacesetter Bearman.

O’Sullivan locked up his front left tyre at Tamburello, ruining his lap time as he was forced to take to the gravel.

The times continued to tumble as Isack Hadjar improved to the top of the timesheets; the Frenchman set a 1:29.805 as Kush Maini was his closest challenger.

With just under half an hour to go, Dennis Hauger held the fastest time, ahead of Zane Maloney and MP Motorsport’s Franco Colapinto.

Reigning FIA F3 champion, Bortoleto improved to a 1:29.423, a time quick enough to go fastest. The Brazilian was followed over the line by Aron, who went 0.088 of a second slower.

Martins suffered a quiet session, sitting in 18th place just ahead of his teammate O’Sullivan.

Bortoleto improved once more with 20 minutes remaining, extending his advantage to half a second over Hadjar.

Second place in the timesheets changed hands as the clock ticked down, and Richard Verschoor usurped Hadjar. The Dutchman couldn’t break into the 1:28s and challenge Bortoleto.

PREMA began to pick up the pace with 13 minutes left, and Antonelli moved into P2. Ollie Bearman will drive for Haas in first practice in Formula 1 and slotted into fifth.

Maloney moved into fourth despite locking up at Rivazza, clocking a 1:29.180 with 10 minutes to go.

The field got closer to Bortoleto’s time, who sat atop the timesheets for much of the session. He was usurped by Aron’s 1:28.852 as the track continued to rubber in and gain grip.

The session came to a halt with seven minutes left. Bearman crashed at Tamburello, ending his session hours before driving in Formula 1 for Haas in the first practice.
