BarterBarter: “In Race 2 if it’s dry it’ll be an issue” on track limits which cause havoc in Qualifying

Hugh Barter says “in Race 2 if it’s dry  it’ll be an issue” after Qualifying in Austria as track limits caught out a multitude of drivers on Saturday.

The Australian qualified in P19, just six tenths slower than pole sitter Gregoire Saucy in a highly competitive field at Red Bull Ring.

Rain is forecast for Saturday, Barter said that if the track is dry on Sunday, track limits could have an impact on the result.

“In Qualifying, it was less of an issue because everyone had an idea of what to do, but I think in Race 2, if it’s dry, I think it’ll be an issue.

Track limits caused havoc, a lot of drivers lost lap times as they ran over the white line and breached the track limits more than 10 drivers lost lap times due to track limits.

Barter told insideF2: “You tend to drive away from the kerbs in the wet so maybe it’s a bit easier, but today was a bit hard. In Practice, some drivers had 10+ warnings for track limits.”

The Campos driver is anticipating rain during Saturday’s action and underlined the importance of keeping off the kerbs to maximise lap time in the wet.

“Definitely, some rain, looking at that forecast, it’s going to rain heavily in the morning so I think F3 will get the worst of it, if anything, as it always does.

“I think the idea is just to make as many positions up, especially in the rain. A lot can happen, so stay on track and see what comes of that.”

Barter also didn’t have the benefit of a slipstream during qualifying, which cost him top speed, The Australian said he could have got into the top 15 with a tow.

“Free Practice was quite solid, lacking in a couple of areas, but it wasn’t bad, and then unfortunately, in Qualifying, I had no tow, a bit on my behalf but a couple of driving errors cost me what potentially could’ve been top 15.”

Barter will look for his first points finish in FIA F3 at Red Bull Ring for Campos.
