Dino Beganovic takes pole in Formula 2’s first visit to Madrid with a 1:44.331 lap, over two tenths quicker than Alex Dunne in second and five tenths quicker than Rafael Camera in third.
This is the 22 year olds third pole position in Formula 2 and it did not disappoint. His final lap was an improvement on his provisional pole time where he took two tenths off with purple sectors 1 and 2.
The session, which was delayed at the start, reflected uncertainty towards the new Madrid track with Kush Maini spinning into the wall bringing out the red flag five minutes into the session.
With 23 minutes left on the clock, drivers came back out for a reduced qualifying. Nikola Tsolov set an early benchmark with Dunne closely following in P2 and Roman Bilinski P3.
Not long after that, Nicolas Varrone hit the mid corner of Turn 19 bringing out a second red flag.
Drivers came back onto the track which was evolving each lap, after everyone had done their flying lap Beganovic had jumped from 9th to 1st after a sudden charge in sector 1 and 2. Dunne followed him by two tenths and his DAMS Lucas Oil teammate Roman Bilinski half a second behind.
With 9 minutes left, the Ferrari Academy driver was improving on his own time with purple sectors in one, two and three leaving him with an eight tenth advantage to Dunne in P2.
A final red flag was brought out by Brit John Bennett who pushed too hard at Turn 11, clipping the rear end in to the barrier.
A final scramble with three minutes left on the clock allowed Dunne to briefly snatch pole from the Swedish driver, but this was not enough as Beganovic was over two tenth clear of the rest of the field.
Camera jumped from the mid-field (P14) to P3 right at the end, finding over two seconds of pace.
You can watch tomorrow’s Sprint Race 14:15 local time.
