PHM Racing endured a mixed afternoon with their first points of the season looking like a possibility with Roy Nissany running P10 in the Feature Race, taking advantage of carnage on Lap 17.
He fought hard but in the end, dropped down to P12 at the chequered flag in what felt like an opportunity missed for the German team.
Bob Vavrik, Team Manager of PHM Racing by Charouz spoke with InsideF2 about his drivers weekends, Josh Mason’s continued improvement in performance and how former FIA Formula 2 driver Jack Aitken is helping Josh adapt to life in Formula 2.
“If you have a look at Josh, the team is pretty happy because he completely skipped over F3 and it’s the second weekend for him, he’s more or less starting to get used to it.”
“We need some more laps on a dry track, the end of the second race was actually more or less a dry track but, at Spa it was completely wet and yesterday was also wet.”
“So generally we are happy because he went well, he kept the car on the track as you see some other more experienced drivers went out for several reasons but also because it was wet.”
When speaking about Nissany’s race weekend, he expressed his views on his qualifying performance and what standards he wants to see going forward from the Israeli driver.
“About Roy, as we see once he starts the weekend with a bad qualifying then of course to finish in the middle of the field it’s not bad at all but, this is not what we are looking for.”
Going into detail about the physical preparation and how Josh’s time in the EuroFormula Open Championship helped him physically to prepare him for a track like Zandvoort in Formula 2.
“Yeah it’s again, this track is pretty technical, it’s not a super high-speed track so physically it’s not a big disaster being a slow track.”
“But of course the time between the summer he spent also getting physically prepared, so he is pretty ready”
Current DTM and former FIA Formula 2 driver Jack Aitken was at Zandvoort this weekend for PHM to help coach Mason and try and help him bed into life in the championship and get him up to speed.
“In the past, we have worked together and he was also testing with us a few weeks ago.”
“It’s for sure a benefit for Josh, Josh is an experienced guy but it just made sense to bring Jack in.”
We will see what the PHM Racing pairing can achieve when they are back in action at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza in a week’s time.
