Formula 2’s newest race winner Gabriel Bortoleto is buoyant about the rest of the season having got his first win under his belt last time out.

One week on his first Feature Race win in Austria, the Brazilian reflected that it was “such a special weekend overall. I think we were just very confident since the beginning of the weekend about that track and how we could perform.”

The Invicta driver is in good form, having scored points in all of the last 8 races in the series. Bortoleto is aware that consistency is a recipe for success in Formula 2, with former champions such as Mick Schumacher and Theo Pourchaire identifying consistency as strengths on their way to winning the championship in 2020 and 2023 respectively. Bortoleto believes consistency is a fundamental strength of his, demonstrated on his way to the Formula 3 title last season.

“I think it is my natural way of driving and behaving during the races. I know when you take some risks and when not to. I would say that I have been scoring points in the last races because I have been able to finish, and place the car where it could finish.”

Having chosen race winning outfit Invicta as his team for 2024 following on from his F3 title success in 2023, the McLaren driver is seemingly enjoying life at the Norfolk based team, noting how much they have helped him settle into the series.

“They have been mega to me. Every support they are giving to me, (they) are teaching me a lot of stuff since I am a rookie in this category. I’ve been learning a lot with them. Especially starts and stuff like this. I have been struggling a lot since the beginning of the season. Now, I think we are in a good position, I would say. So, we did a lot of progress together.”

Having secured his first win and moving up to third in the standings, the rookie is eyeing a strong second half of the season to put him in contention for the championship.

“What I look at the most is not the championship (itself), I look at race by race. I say ‘brick by brick’ – I hear this from my bosses in this sport. They always tell me to look race by race and do the best I can every weekend, because at the end of the day, that will give you points, and at the end of the season, your results every race will show you more or less your average points every round.”

Bortoleto will be in contention for good points again this weekend at Silverstone having qualified in sixth in qualifying on Friday.
