As we head towards the Middle East for culmination of the FIA Formula 2 season it has been announced that Callum Ilott will be testing for the Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN team.
He will return to Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN and Formula One when he takes the wheel of the team’s C39 in next month’s test session in Abu Dhabi.
By then the young British driver will know if he is a Champion or not as he is set to be challenging for the Formula 2 title in the final two events in Bahrain. (Visit our dedicated Round 11 Race Page)
Ilott is a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy (FDA), is currently in second in the FIA Formula 2 Championship having claimed three wins so far this season.
The 22-year-old has previous experience of Formula One machinery, having driven for the team a test session in Barcelona in 2019.
Callum Ilott spoke via the Sauber-Group’s press team;
“I am really looking forward to being in the car again in Abu Dhabi and I am grateful to Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN and the Ferrari Driver Academy for this opportunity. Any chance to drive a Formula One car is important: it’s a way to grow my experience, not just in the cockpit, but also working with the team: the engineers and crew are among the best in the world and there is so much to learn from them, so I am going to make it count.”
Having had the chance to test for HAAS last month but then to miss out due to poor weather the team will be happy they can offer the potential Formula 2 Champion the lap time that both the driver and The FDA desire.
The Team principal of Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN and CEO Sauber Motorsport AG Frédéric Vasseur said;
“Callum is one of the most promising young drivers coming through the ranks, as his performance in F2 has shown this year. He was unlucky to miss out on a chance to show his ability last month, when FP1 was called off at the Nürburgring, so he thoroughly deserves his outing with the team in Abu Dhabi. His attitude and work ethic have left a very positive impression with the team when he tested with us last year and testing with him in Abu Dhabi is something we are really looking forward to.”
