Brazil’s Rafael Câmara won a dramatic Spa Feature Race to saw a 20 minute red flag delay, as Invicta completed a clean sweep at the histoic circuit for the second year in a row.

The Ferrari Academy driver started from pole position and survived losing the lead, three safety car periods and a red flag to eventually reach the chequered flag first.

It’s his second victory of the year for the reigning Formula 3 champion, and puts him back in the hunt for the F2 title.

The red flag, which was due to a heavy crash for Trident’s Laurens Van Hoepen, jumbled the order, and meant Câmara needed to pass Noel Léon, who’d started last, as well as multiple cars on a different strategy to clinch victory.

And after another late Safety Car, the 21-year-old pulled a gap to Alex Dunne behind and secured victory in a race that ran to time, rather than the scheduled 25 laps. Full points were still awarded.

Tasanapol Inthraphuvasak finished second, ahead of champioship leader Nikola Tsolov, as both benefited from a five-second time penalty for Rodin’s Dunne, who’d breached track limits on too many occasions.

MP’s Gabriele Mini, who also served a five-second time penalty for colliding with DAMS’ Roman Bilinski at Turn 1, finished fifth, ahead of Rafael Villagomez, Noel Léon, who was also penalised for track limits offences, Colton Herta, Ritomo Miyata and Mari Boya.

Tsolov retains a healthy championship lead of 27 points ahead of Mini, with Câmara closing slightly in third.

Câmara calm through chaos

The Brazilian displayed his composure throughout this race, overcoming multiple setbacks to prevail. 

His start was poor for the second Feature Race in a row, as he lost the lead before Turn 1, as he had done in Silverstone two weeks ago. He ahd to fend off an early attack from title rival Tsolov, with the pair banging wheels at La Source, with the Bulgarian left bouncing across the gravel 

But he remained calm and by Lap 5 was in the lead again as the super-soft tyre began to struggle. Câmara, Inthraphuvasak, Dunne and Tsolov were the leading drivers on the super-soft tyres, and they were diving into the pit lane at the earliest opportunity at the end of Lap 6. 

This left Câmara’s team mate and Sprint Race winner on Saturday, Josh Durksen in the lead, while Câmara himself had a healthy advantage over Dunne. 

But strategy was thrown out of the window on Lap 9 as Van Hoepen ran slightly wide at the exit of Malmedy corner, spinning off and crashing heavily, with the resulting damage necessitating a red flag to clear the debris and oil strewn across the track.

But before the red flag was called, Campos’ Noel Léon, who’d started on the super softs from last place, and had already pitted for medium tyres, pitted again and emerged ahead of Câmara, meaning he was now at the head of the queue of those who’d already stopped. 

After a delay of more than 20 minutes, racing resumed and the action was in the middle of the pack as Léon and Câmara began fighting their way past slower cars and those who hadn’t made their mandatory pit stop. 

Câmara said after the race that this was the biggest challenge of the day, as he knew clear air was vital to winning the race.

He managed to regain the effective race lead with 16 minutes to go, as the race would now run to 60 minutes, rather than 25 laps, due to the red flag.

Léon defended the inside at La Source, but Câmara simply carried more speed, braked later and got better traction than his rival to snatch the lead, before blasting past two more cars on the Kemmel Straight with DRS. 

Seconds later, Emerson Fittipaldi spun off, requiring a third Safety Car period. Those who had yet to pit, did so, and despite an initial burst of speed on the super-soft tyres, they failed to score points.

Following the restart, Câmara kept cool and delivered a fully deserved victory.
