The FIA Formula 2 Championship resumed with an eventful day of in-season testing at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, showcasing the depth and pace of the 2024 contenders.

The day commenced under challenging conditions with a notably green track and cooler temperatures, limiting initial track activity. Despite this, the session gradually intensified as Dennis Hauger of MP Motorsport set a swift pace early on, clocking a 1:25.372 to dominate the morning proceedings. His closest rivals, Virtuosi Racing’s Kush Maini and Trident’s Richard Verschoor, also delivered competitive times, but Hauger’s performance stood out as he retook the lead after an initial challenge from Maini.

The afternoon session brought its own drama and was abruptly concluded due to rainfall. Gabriel Bortoleto of Invicta Racing claimed the top spot with a remarkable 1:25.143, edging out DAMS’ Jak Crawford by a narrow margin. The session also saw strong performances from Campos Racing’s Isack Hadjar and Hitech GP’s Paul Aron, who each led at different stages.

Teams and drivers tested various elements, including different aerodynamic configurations, highlighting their strategies to optimize performance. Notably, Prema Racing’s Andrea Kimi Antonelli and Ollie Bearman were among the busiest, gathering valuable data across over 100 laps.

The day was punctuated by multiple red flags, one caused by Rodin Motorsport’s Ritomo Miyata’s spin, which brought an early end to the morning session. The afternoon continued in a similar vein with several interruptions, including a spin by Antonelli and a stoppage from ART GP’s Zak O’Sullivan.

As the teams adapt to the evolving conditions and the new car setups, the testing at Barcelona remains crucial for fine-tuning their preparations for the upcoming races. With day two set to commence at 09:00 local time, the paddock is buzzing with anticipation for what the new day will bring.
