The second day of FIA Formula 2 in-season testing at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya brought some thrilling performances as teams and drivers continued to adapt to the 2024 machinery. Josep María Martí of Campos Racing showcased a particularly strong understanding of the track, capitalizing on his familiarity to set the fastest time of the test so far with a stellar 1:23.681.

Martí expressed great satisfaction with the day’s work, noting the team’s comprehensive progress. “It was obviously a really good day for us,” he said to, emphasising the effectiveness of their qualifying simulations and the potential still untapped in both the car and the tires. Despite leading the timings, Martí remains focused on broader goals, particularly enhancing the car’s setup for upcoming races, given the nuances of the new F2 car introduced this season.

The morning session saw a flurry of activity despite cooler track conditions, with PHM Racing and DAMS being among the first on track. Challenges were apparent as several drivers struggled with handling in the pitlane, highlighting the tricky conditions. Notably, Trident’s Roman Stanek and Richard Verschoor both impressed during their qualifying simulations, setting formidable times on the soft compound tires.

As the session progressed, Campos Racing’s strategy seemed to diverge from others, focusing on targeted runs that Martí believes will benefit the team throughout the season. “We think we’ve understood the philosophy of this new car and what it needs quite well,” Martí remarked, confident in the team’s direction and setup.

The afternoon session, led by Rodin Motorsport’s Ritomo Miyata, shifted focus towards race runs and different setup configurations, reflecting the teams’ priorities in fine-tuning their race strategies. Despite higher track temperatures, the pace was generally slower, with only a handful of drivers opting for qualifying simulations.

Miyata topped the timesheets, followed closely by teammate Zane Maloney and Invicta Racing’s Gabriel Bortoleto, showcasing strong performances across the board. The session was briefly interrupted by a red flag caused by Franco Colapinto’s off-track excursion, but resumed without significant issues, ending with productive long runs by most teams.

As the test at Barcelona continues, the teams are gaining valuable insights into the behavior of the new cars under various conditions, setting the stage for what promises to be a highly competitive season in FIA Formula 2.
