Dino Beganovic takes an impressive second race win in two races in the FIA Formula 2 Azerbaijan Sprint Race ahead of Laurens van Hoepen.
Championship leader Nikola Tsolov started on reverse grid pole and managed to keep his lead into Turn 1 ahead of van Hoepen.
Behind them, Tsolov’s rival, Rafa Câmara tapped the rear of Mari Boya’s Aston Martin liveried PREMA, putting him into the wall. Boya couldn’t continue in the race and as a result, bringing out the Safety Car.
The stewards deemed Câmara responsible and awarded him a 10 second time penalty, dropping him way down the field and out of the points.Â
The Safety Car restart put Beganovic hot on the heels of Tsolov with the DAMS’ driver’s pace looking undeniable. Beganovic made his move around the outside of Turn 1 on Lap 6 and seemed to have it under control from there.
Tsolov’s race began to unravel from there, he dropped down to P6 due to a couple of small, but costly mistakes.
With only four laps to go, Joshua Dürksen found the wall at Turn 1, he went wide attempting to overtake Noel León.
Beganovic controlled the restart perfectly, leaving him and the rest of the field in a one lap shootout situation. Van Hoepen in second couldn’t pose a challenge and the Swedish driver took the chequered flag.
Alex Dunne joined them on the podium after a storming drive from P10 to P3, including a double overtake into Turn 3.
We’ll be treated to three F2 races this weekend, one Sprint Race and two Feature Races. Dunne will start Feature Race 1 from pole position later on Friday, his team mate Martinius Stenshorne gets the privilege on Saturday for Feature Race 2.
