Felipe Drugovich’s weekend has been a vast improvement on how his season started in Bahrain. He described today’s FIA Formula 2 Feature Race in Monaco as, ‘the race of my life’.
The Brazilian driver left the desert with just two championship points in the bag.
“I think the first race, the first weekend for me wasn’t good at all. I had everything to make it good but in the end we didn’t get many points. And now this race I missed out on points as well, but there was nothing I could do differently to be fair.”
After starting in P9 and finishing third on the podium, today’s result was unexpected for the UNI-Virtuosi driver and the team, following their decision to go for an alternate strategy.
“I never thought a podium was on the cards, no way. We were thinking that if the strategy worked a P6 or P5 would be really good but obviously we were wrong.
“We maximised everything. The first pit stop was great , and the first stint I was really pushing Christian [Lundgaard] to go forward. I’m very happy with the result.”
“Because it’s in Monaco, you have a feeling every time you finish a race, and this race I really feel that I didn’t put a foot wrong. I was on the limit, on the edge, every lap, pushing for my life basically, and I’m extremely happy with my job.
“As I said I was racing for my life, I couldn’t do much better than that.”
Drugovich is already thinking ahead and admitted he needs a little more consistency if he’s to be a championship contender.
“I think I just have to keep doing what I’m doing and focus on being consistent. For the next races also being a street circuit [Baku] this result is going to give me a lot of confidence. We also gathered a lot of experience from this weekend, and hopefully we can get consistent with the results in the next race weekend.”
