Drugovich Storms to Victory in Barcelona

Felipe DrugovichDrugovich dominates in Spain to snatch championship lead from Pourchaire

Felipe Drugovich wins the Feature Race in Barcelona after showing some remarkable tyre management skills on the alternate strategy.

Jack Doohan was able to keep ahead of the pack from pole position, with Frederik Vesti behind him getting ahead of Jüri Vips for second into Turn 1.

Dennis Hauger made contact with Olli Caldwell at the final chicane on the first lap. Both drivers were able to carry on but the Norwegian picked up a 5 second time penalty. Hauger had to pit the following lap for a front wing change.

Jehan Daruvala experienced a sudden mechanical failure on the exit of Turn 5 in the early stages of the race, the PREMA driver was in a great position, being the highest running driver on the alternate strategy. His car was left stranded mid-corner which subsequently brought out the Safety Car.

Fellow Red Bull junior driver, Ayumu Iwasa was extremely unlucky to have been involved in the incident as he ran into the back of Daruvala’s car since he was following closely to overtake. Iwasa was forced to come into the pits to repair the damage to his front wing.

Vips made an early stop on Lap 8 from third, the stop was slow which lost the Estonian driver a lot of time to the frontrunners.

Doohan pitted from the front of the pack on Lap 12, Drugovich chose to extend his stint by a further five laps. The Brazilian driver gave a masterclass on tyre management and put himself in a great position to challenge for the win, despite starting tenth. He completed an impressive 17 laps on the soft compound tyre.

Drugovich was able to pass Vesti for a net-second place a few laps later. This led to a fight for the lead with Doohan. He eventually passed the pole sitter on Lap 27 after making the alternate strategy work a treat!

Clément Novalak was another driver to have fun with this strategy. He started 12th on the grid with some incredible overtakes due to being two seconds a lap quicker than the drivers in front of him in the final few laps. He finished the overall race in fifth, behind Logan Sargeant by just three-tenths of a second!

Doohan and Vesti picked up their first podiums of their Formula 2 career after an impressive race for both. MP Motorsport and Felipe Drugovich came out on top after an extraordinary day from both the team and driver. This means he extends his lead of the championship by 26 points.
