Rodin Motorsport’s Alex Dunne continued his strong start to his F2 season by qualifying third in Barcelona.

The Irish driver was overall positive and seemed pleased that ‘as a team to still be there’ is what matters after finishing 0.225 seconds behind Rafael Câmara’s pole position time and only 0.090 behind Joshua Duerksen in second.

However, Duerksen was handed a five-place grid penalty following Friday’s session for failing to slow in a yellow flag zone, promoting Dunne to the front row alongside Câmara.

He told InsideF2 it was “more or less as quick as I could have gone’ and we need to ‘see where we’re losing the pace to [Invicta]”.

Dunne added that “our race pace is normally quite strong” but comparing this to the Invicta Racing drivers he believes that their pace “is pretty impressive’ and does not “imagine they are going to just lose that randomly”.

He said: “If we can get bit closer I will be happy, but I don’t imagine to be the quickest all of a sudden”.

Asked about the best overtaking opportunity, the Alpine Academy Driver said:  “Probably into turn 1. The rest of the track is very difficult with tire degradation high following in the dirty air through the ‘medium and high speed corners.”

Dunne has reached the podium in each of the four rounds so far this season, with Sprint Race third places in Melbourne and Miami, before a pair of second place finishes in the Canada and Monaco Feature Race’s.

He’s currently fourth in the standings, level with his Rodin team mate, Martinius Stenshorne, on 48 points.

Formula 2 continues with the Sprint Race at 14:15 local time on Saturday the 13th of June, and the Feature Race at 11:25 local time on Sunday the 14th of June.
