Joshua Dürksen topped the sole practice session for Formula 2 at Silverstone ahead of Pepe Marti and Taylor Barnard.

The session began in the rain before drying enough for drivers to use the slick tyres towards the end.

Franco Colapinto set the first flying lap of the session at 2:02.326, which was quickly beaten by Paul Aron.

The championship leader was the first driver to break the two-minute barrier, driving to a 1:59.526 for Hitech.

10 minutes into the session, Aron held the fastest lap time ahead of Trident’s Richard Verschoor and Roman Stanek.

Many drivers chose to remain in the pit lane, including Ollie Bearman, the newly signed Haas Formula 1 driver for next season, and his PREMA teammate Kimi Antonelli.

Williams junior Zak O’Sullivan had a quiet opening 15 minutes at Silverstone as the rain fell before improving to second place, three-tenths slower than Aron.

American Jak Crawford slotted into third place, setting an identical lap time to O’Sullivan. The rain stopped as the session progressed, with the drivers tackling the gripless surface.

Antonelli went to the top of the timesheets as the track dried before being beaten by his teammate Bearman, who set his 1:59.474 on new wet tyres.

The British driver was fractionally faster than the Mercedes junior as the top three, including Aron, were separated by half a tenth of a second.

Despite the wet conditions, the DRS remained available in the two activation zones on the Wellington and Hangar straights.

Red Bull junior Marti shattered the session’s fastest lap; the Spaniard went seven-tenths of a second faster than Antonelli as the track dried.

The track remained relatively quiet with 10 minutes to go, with just four cars on the circuit.

Colapinto, who sat in 20th place after sitting in the pit lane for much of the session, became the first driver to attempt a run on the slick tyres.

The Argentinian was met with a lack of grip on the track, but he persevered and set flying laps.

Paraguayan Joshua Dürksen improved to set the quickest time ahead of Marti for AIX Racing.

Multiple others followed the Williams junior in putting dry tyres on in the final few minutes. The conditions were treacherous as Bearman ran off the track at Village, losing critical tyre temperature.

Copse proved a difficult turn as Antonelli and Barnard ran wide, showcasing their car control skills, catching the car sliding in the damp runoff area.

Verschoor improved to second place as the chequered flag dropped, and Colapinto spun at Vale and got stuck in the gravel.

Frenchman Isack Hadjar didn’t set a competitive time during the 45-minute session.
