F2 in Barcelona: Winners and Losers

Invicta Racing returned to the top step of the FIA Formula 2 podium in a Feature Race as Rafael Câmara delivered an incredible drive to victory.

The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya sprung up plenty of surprises and entertaining action across the weekend, but who are the winners and losers from Round 5?

Winner: Rafael Câmara

The Brazilian bounced back from his Monaco disappointment with a fabulous weekend. He achieved a brilliant pole position and then executed a stunning Feature Race strategy, where he took the unfancied soft tyre 22 laps from the start of the race.

He expertly carved his way through his opponents on fresher hard tyres to win commandingly by 9.5 seconds. It appears Invicta and Câmara are finding their groove.

Loser: Joshua Durksen

Once again Durksen see’s his weekend undone by grid penalties. He’d qualified second fastest on Friday, but the joy of an Invicta front-row lock-out for Sunday was short-lived as it turned out he’d failed to respect yellow flags, meaning he would start Sunday’s race from seventh.

The decision to start on the harder tyre also failed to pay off, and front wing damage on Lap 1 certainly didn’t help. Speed for Durksen this season hasn’t been an issue, he desperately needs a trouble-free weekend.

Winner: Nikola Tsolov

Tsolov backed-up his Monaco victory with another successful weekend, finishing both races on the podium to reclaim the championship lead from Gabrielle Mini. The Bulgarian made the most of his alternative strategy to pass title rivals Mini and Dunne in the closing stages.

The weekend also marked his first points finishes that weren’t race wins, outside of the fastest lap point in the Monaco Sprint Race, where he finished ninth.

Loser: Colton Herta

It was an up-and-down weekend for the American. He got to drive an F1 car for the first time on Friday with Cadillac, before achieving his best F2 Qualifying result of eighth later in the afternoon.

He was set for a maiden podium on Sunday too, running third on the final lap – but a lock-up and trip across the gravel at Turn 5 saw that escape him.

Sunday’s Feature Race saw drivers on the alternative strategy surge past him as he fell out of the points.

In many ways, a lot of positives, but the loss of the Sprint Race podium will hurt.

Winner: Laurens Van Hoepen

Finally, some good news for Trident and Laurens Van Hoepen as he returned to the points for the first time since the Montreal Sprint Race. It was a terrific comeback drive on the alternative strategy, pulling off some stupendous moves, including taking two drivers at Turn 12, by simply driving around them.

His weekend looked like it might unravel again after the red flag in Qualifying left him 13th on the grid – but he and Trident showed their speed to reach the points.

Loser: Rafael Villagomez

The Mexican driver again looked fast in the Van Amersfoort, setting the fifth fastest time in Qualifying on Friday.

He ran in the top positions in both races early on, but the VAR’s struggled to keep their tyres alive and paid the price as they walked away with nothing.

Loser: Martinius Stenshorne

The Norweigian driver had his toughest F2 weekend so far, having impressed in the early rounds. Qualifying outside the top 10 left him and Rodin work to do in both races, and while it looked like he might sneak into the points thanks to an early Feature Race pit stop, he tumbled down the order as others passed him on fresher rubber.

Winner: John Bennett

Much like his Trident team mate, Britain’s Bennett has had a tough time in recent races, but things finally came together in the Feature Race on Sunday as he recorded his first points finish of the year.

In a similar fashion to Van Hoepen, Bennett carved his way through the midfield on the alternative strategy, coming home seventh and earning an extra point for setting the fastest lap.
