Boschung’s unfortunate points-dropout after scoring best-ever qualifying position

FIA Formula 2 was back on track today at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

Swiss Driver Ralph Boschung was the fastest for Campos Racing and was the only driver to break the 1m 28s benchmark, just ahead of Hitch Grand Prix’s Marcus Armstrong and DAMS Ayumu Iwasa.

AM Session

Today saw a touch of rain on what was cooler weather than the UK in Barcelona. The start of running saw temps of 14 degrees, this meant a lot of the teams opted to stay in or hold off the long laps.

Championship leader Drugovich was at the top of the order in the opening hour with a 1:29.755.

In second, ART Grand Prix’s Theo Pourchaire was 0.165s off his fellow title contender Avumu Iwasa was 0.369s off the pace in third for DAMS, with Hitch Grand Prix’s Jüri Vips and Virtuosi Racing’s Jack Doohan completing the top five.

The session saw a few stoppages from Calan Williams, Liam Lawson, and Cem Bölükbasi

PM Session

The teams and drivers benefited from a track temp of 19 degrees in the afternoon, this meant they could push on for more race run milage.

After a benchmark time of 1:29.897 from Armstrong during the long-running, Boschung fired to the top of the field, dropping a 1:27.929 to go more than a second faster than the Hitech ace.

Armstrong opted to try the soft rubber but failed to pip Boschung on the timesheets, Japanese duo Ayumu Iwasa and Marino Sato, and they were the only other drivers to come within a second of the Swiss driver.

We had a couple more Red Flags during this session, firstly for Vips, who clipped the barriers at Turn 3, and later for Logan Sargeant at Turn 1.

We look forward now to the second day at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
