‘Final Stint Wasn’t Easy’ says Correa after Feature Race podium

DAMS Lucas Oil’s Juan Manuel Correa said the final 10 laps of the FIA Formula 2 Feature Race were not easy for him, even though he had a massive pace advantage on those ahead of him.

The American driver, who finished both races in Spain third on the road (a post-race penalty dropping him from P3 to eighth in the Sprint), carved his way through the top 10 on soft tyres on Sunday to earn – and keep – third place.

“The tyres needed a lot of management,” he said, adding: “the softs, it’s very easy to just cook them.”

The 24-year-old said it’s easy to get too excited when you get fresh soft rubber to chase down the opposition.

He told InsideF2 that it was enjoyable being the fastest car on track and that he knew a podium was on offer.

“I knew it was on the cards but I had to keep it clean – [the drivers ahead] were respectful [when battling], it was good fun,” he said.

Correa moved up five places from his eighth-place grid slot. He started the race on the harder Pirelli compound, while many ahead of him started on the softs – which left them vulnerable late on in the race.

It helped cap an excellent weekend for DAMS, as the French team won Feature Race with fellow American driver, Jak Crawford.
