Fittipaldi ‘Doing The Best With What I Have’

Brazilian driver Enzo Fittipaldi  says the Van Amersfoort Racing team are struggling to find a balance between speed in Qualifying and race pace after another comeback drive during Sunday’s Feature Race at Silverstone.

The winner of the Jeddah Feature Race earlier this year told InsideF2’s Fraser Ford that it’s hard to secure top results starting so far back – even though the car is able to make up places.

The 22-year-old finished eighth in the Feature Race, after qualifying 20th on Friday.

Sunday’s race was his 77th F2 start, putting him in the top 10 drivers for most FIA Formula 2 race starts.

He said: “We’re struggling to find our pace in Qualifying, we have been since Jeddah.

“It’s been very difficult because we have decent pace in the race and we’re able to make positions up but always starting in the back it’s very hard.”

Fittipaldi stated that better qualifying this season would have resulted in a stronger championship position, rather than the 10th place he currently has with 48 points.

He said: “I’m doing my best with what I have, the team did a good job with the pit stop and the car was competitive today.”

Fittipaldi told us that the team has ‘no idea’ why there is such a discrepancy between qualifying and race pace, calling it ‘very strange’, but said the team would continue pushing for improvement.

He said the gaps between teams with the new F2 car are bigger than before, with some teams – notably PREMA and ART Grand Prix – struggling to maximise the potential of the new ground-effect Formula 2 machine.

The Brazilian is hoping for some more wins and podiums, but admitted he might have to rely on a reverse-grid Sprint Race for that to happen.
