A positive weekend in Barcelona for Enzo Fittipaldi added 18 points to the Brazilian’s tally and left the Rodin Carlin team level in the standings with MP Motorsport.
Fittipaldi finished Friday’s Practice in fifth before going on to qualify P2, only 0.077 seconds behind PREMA’s Oliver Bearman.
After finishing tenth in the Sprint Race, he began Sunday’s Feature Race in P2, making a brave attempt to seize the lead into Turn 1 but ultimately being forced down the escape by Bearman.
“I tried going around the outside and Ollie [Bearman] squeezed me, he didn’t leave me no room but if I was in the same position I would’ve done the same. So I had to take the escape road and go off the track because if not we would’ve crashed”
The field was split in strategies as Fittipaldi became one of the first to pit to attempt to move through the field with fresher tyres.
An early pit stop left him amidst the mid-field who hadn’t pitted, closing the gap to the lead. DRS not having the desired effect that was expected left him stuck behind Maini.
“The DRS effect was not big, much less than what I expected, that DRS would be much stronger but it just wasn’t. So yeah it was a difficult race to overtake.”
“Our pace was good, even after staying behind the traffic and everything, we were still able to keep second so I’m happy.”
Despite the lack of DRS, Fittipaldi found his way back to the front of the field to take the chequered flag in P2, 2.844 seconds behind P1.
I think it was a good race, we showed good pace so we’ll see what happens next. We have the pace so we just have to put everything together”
When asked by InsideF2 about his plans over the three week break, Fittipaldi said: “To train and continue working hard and get back on top”
