MP Motorsport’s Oliver Goethe has lost FIA Formula 2 pole position in Qatar after the stewards handed him a grid penalty for blocking another driver during Qualifying.

The German had secured his first pole position after edging out championship leader, Leonardo Fornaroli, in Friday’s session.

The Invicta driver inherits top spot – and the two points that come with starting Sunday’s Feature Race from pole position.

Goethe was ruled to have impeded Rodin Motorsport’s Martinius Stenshorne during the 30-minute session on Friday evening in Lusail.

The stewards said Goethe had unnecessarily impeded the Norwegian driver during a cool-down lap, with the Rodin driver on a fast lap, and could have done more to avoid the incident at Turn 6.

Goethe has been handed a three-place grid drop in both this weekend’s races, meaning he will start Sunday’s Feature Race from fourth and Saturday’s Sprint Race from 10th.

For Fornaroli, it moves him closer to sealing the F2 title with a round to spare, with his closest championship rivals, DAMS driver Jak Crawford and Hitech’s Luke Browning both outside the top 10 for both races.

The Italian came into the penultimate round of the year with a 19-point advantage over American Crawford, and could start Sunday’s race with at least a 21-point margin, thanks to the two points for pole position.
