Hadjar tops Practice in Bahrain ahead of Colapinto and Maloney

Formula Championship Round Yas Island Practice & Qualifying

Campos Racing driver Isack Hadjar topped practice in Formula 2 at the Bahrain International Circuit.

Franco Colapinto set the second-quickest time for MP Motorsport, ahead of Rodin Motorsport’s Zane Maloney.

At the green light, a flurry of cars joined the circuit in Bahrain for the sole Formula 2 practice session of the weekend.

Some 22-car field completed their installation lap at the start of practice, returning to the pit lane after one out lap.

After a quiet first 10 minutes of the session, Red Bull Junior Hadjar set the first representative time with a 1:48.615.

Dennis Hauger ran wide at Turn 11 but quickly rejoined the circuit at the start of his third Formula 2 campaign.

Argentinian driver Colapinto improved on Hadjar’s time, setting a 1:46.975 on his F2 debut, stepping up from FIA Formula 3.

Pepe Marti went four-tenths of a second quicker for Campos with half an hour remaining as the track continued to rubber in.

Hauger became the first driver to break the 1:46 barrier, driving to a 1:45.904 before being quickly usurped by Marti.

PREMA’s Oliver Bearman broke into the top five with a 1:46.877, slightly quicker than his teammate Kimi Antonelli, who quickly followed him over the line.

The yellow flags were briefly called as Miyata spun at Turn 1 but quickly rejoined the circuit with 25 minutes left.

Maloney went to the top of the timesheets for Rodin Motorsport, setting a 1:45.588 as the times continued to tumble.

Debutant Joshua Durksen ran off the track at Turn 13 in a harmless mistake as he pushed over the limits of the car’s grip.

The Paraguayan driver sat in 12th place, 1.1 seconds from Maloney’s pace-setting time.

Miyata improved to eighth place just under half an hour into the session, as just 0.7 of a second separated the top 10.

The high track temperature and an abrasive surface caused some tyre degradation on the hard compound Pirelli tyres as the session ran in the middle of the afternoon.

The Japanese driver Miyata improved once more and slotted into second place, creating a Rodin Motorsport 1-2 atop the timesheets, with less than a tenth of a second separating the pair.

Both PREMA drivers found themselves outside the top 10, with Antonelli sitting in 16th place ahead of his teammate Bearman in P18.

Hadjar drove to P1 with 10 minutes remaining, having completed 13 laps in his Red Bull-liveried Campos Racing car.

Bearman continued to slide and struggle with the balance of his car as Marti slotted into third place, setting the fastest middle sector of the session.

Paul Aron suffered a slide at Turn 4 in his sector, locking the rear brakes, but continued after missing the apex early in the lap.

Colapinto improved to second place behind Hadjar in the final few minutes of a very busy session.
