How Maloney’s Outside of F2 Experiences Have Influenced 2024 Season

Zane Maloney quickly became a championship contender in the opening round of the 2024 FIA Formula 2 season where he won both races in Bahrain.

He currently sits third in the drivers’ standing but not much separates himself, Isack Hadjar and current leader, Paul Aron.

Apart from his great form so far in F2 this year, Maloney has also had close connections to Andretti Motorsport in Formula E. He’s completed multiple rookie tests and practice sessions with the team.

After leaving the Red Bull Driver Academy ahead of this season, he announced that he will be reserve driver for Sauber F1 team alongside last year’s F2 champion Théo Pourchaire, who has since left.

Speaking with insideF2 ahead of Round 6 in Barcelona, Maloney told us how his experiences outside of Formula 2 have helped him to grow as a driver:

“The amount of, let’s say, smart engineers I’ve been working with this year has been amazing. Obviously Rodin, Andretti and also Sauber. For sure, that’s helped me as a driver.

“I think, also being at the race weekends in Formula E and seeing it from a different perspective has also helped me. And then of course driving a bit more as well, in the Formula E car and getting more mature as a driver and as a person.

“We get so limited driving anyways that anything you can do to learn a bit more and learn from a different engineer that has a different perspective is a positive thing. A lot of it is me improving as a driver.

“In F3 I’d say I maximise my performance in terms of on track every time. Of course, there were some silly mistakes.

“I’d say that last year in F2 was not maximised to any means from my side of things so this year I’m just back to the level that I see myself performing at each week.”
