Hungaroring a Favourite Track for Formula 2 Drivers

The FIA Formula 2 series sees a return to the Hungaroring in Budapest, after missing out last season; and it turns out it’s quite a favourite circuit amongst the drivers in the paddock. The top three in today’s Qualifying session elaborated on why they like to race here.

Pole sitter for this Sunday’s F2 Feature Race, Ayumu Iwasa, won Race 1 last season in the Formula 3 Championship:

“Basically I love the technical track like this. A lot of corners, a lot of low speed, and even the high speed. I don’t have really big confidence on the high speed corners but this track has got quite a lot of low speeds so, these are very good.

“Also this track should use quite a lot of mechanical grip. So [the way I drive] on a downforce corner this circuit is quite good for me. When I was racing in Japan I was driving in Renault quite a lot, so that’s why I have good confidence to drive a mechanical car, and that’s why I really love this track.”

Joining Iwasa on the front row, is Hitech’s birthday boy, Marcus Armstrong:

“I enjoy this track. It was always the circuit that I would play my Playstation on when I was a kid, because it’s so technical and it’s fun.

“I enjoy the place – we always used to come here testing a bit in F3, and when I was a bit younger, so I’ve done plenty of laps around here.

“It could potentially be my favourite track if I do a good job on Sunday.”

Championship leader, Felipe Drugovich, qualified in third place for Sunday’s Feature:

“I like this track. I think I will always put Silverstone and Mugello in front of this, but this is definitely high up on my list and I really enjoy driving here.”

With rain forecast for tomorrow, a wet circuit could shake the Championship standings up as Formula 2 heads into the summer break.
