The FIA Formula 2 Championship has confirmed that the Imola round called off in May will not be replaced.
The Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari was set to host Round 5 of a scheduled 14 from 19–21 May, but extreme flooding in northeast Italy forced F1’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix as well as the F2 and F3 support races to be called off on 17 May.
Reports indicate that at least 14 people were killed and at least 36,000 displaced as a consequence of the flooding.
F2’s season has now been shortened to 13 races, while F3 will now have nine rounds rather than 10.
F1 has not confirmed plans for postponing or replacing the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
In a press release confirming the cancellations, F2 and F3 CEO Bruno Michel said, “First, I am very sorry that we could not race to Imola this year, but obviously this was the right decision, and our thoughts are with those who have been affected.
“Since then, we have looked at several options, but ultimately, we have decided that we will not add a new venue to this year’s calendars. With a total of thirteen F2 rounds and nine F3 events, I believe we still have enough races to deliver two amazing and competitive seasons.”
F2 and F3 return to the track on 30 June at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria.
