Swiss driver Ralph Boschung is taking a break from driving in 2022 FIA Formula 2 Championship to allow his neck injury, sustained in Imola, to fully heal and will be replaced in his Campos car by Spaniard Roberto Mehri.
Merhi will step into the #15 car from this weekend’s round in Austria, which is Round 8 of the 2022 season.
24-year-old Bosching, has missed races in Barcelona, Monaco and Silverstone, but managed to score points in Azerbaijan despite severe neck pain. The Swiss described the last few months as “tough”, adding the injury has dominated his every day and professional life.
Boschung, who has three F2 podiums to his name, explained in a team statement: “It’s very difficult to leave the team mid-season like this, but I really need to recover from this injury and I thank my sponsors and the team for being fully supportive.”
Campos Team Principal Adrián Campos Jr extended a warm welcome Mehri, who joins the team having competed in the Japanese Super GT series this year, adding: “We expect a quick adaptation and let’s complete a positive weekend together.”
The 31-year-old Spaniard, who made 13 starts for Marussia in Formula 1 back in 2015, said: “I’m delighted to drive Ralph’s MoonMobile car. I will try my best to achieve strong results to respond to the trust that Ralph, his sponsors and Campos Racing have placed in me.”
Merhi has previous experience with the Campos team having raced for the team in both 2017 and 2018 and joins British driver Olli Caldwell who is in his first full season of Formula 2.
Campos are 10th in the teams’ standings, with 34-points, all scored by Boschung, who has only competed in eight races in 2022.
