Pirelli’s Head of F1 and Car Racing, Mario Isola, has revealed that Pirelli will nominate their medium and soft compounds for this weekend’s FIA Formula 2 round at Monza.
The tyre company which has its headquarters in the neighbouring city of Milan have based their tyre selections on the demands of Monza, a circuit which combines long straights with tight, tricky left-right corners.
With the weather forecast at Monza showing little chance of rain throughout the three days, as well as temperatures that are expected to be in the high 20s, Isola has stated that thermal degradation may give the drivers food for thought on how to manage the tyres during the weekend’s Qualifying session and three races.
“Monza is the actually the first and only time that we’ve nominated the P Zero Yellow medium and P Zero Red soft tyres for Formula 2 this year. This particular selection has been to cater for all the different demands of Monza.”
“If the weather is warm in Italy, as can often be the case at this time of year, thermal degradation could become a factor as well. So there definitely will be a few things to think about for the drivers when it comes to managing the tyres this weekend.”
Isola also discussed the difference between the 2020 and 2021 medium compound of tyre, with Isola saying that the 2021 medium compound is closer to the soft compound Pirelli than its predecessor.
“The 2021 medium Formula 2 compound offers more performance compared to its 2020 equivalent, bringing it closer in outright performance to the soft, which is unchanged in specification from last year.”
