‘It’s an awesome track’: F2 paddock on Qatar addition for 2024

Earlier this year, FIA Formula 2 announced the calendar for the 2024 season, with Qatar replacing the round at the Dutch circuit, Zandvoort.

F2’s first-ever visit to Qatar, which hosted the 2022 FIFA World Cup, will be Round 13 of the 2024 season from 29th November – 1st December, meaning the season-ending finale in Abu Dhabi is no longer a stand-alone weekend.

Formula 1 returns to the Losail circuit this weekend for a Sprint weekend, the first time the new ‘ground-effect’ cars will have visited the circuit.

And with the new generation of F2 car in a similar vein to F1’s machines from next year too, this year’s racing will indicate how F2 cars might fare around the 5.4km layout.

We caught up with the F2 paddock, ironically in Zandvoort, to find out how the drivers and team bosses felt about the addition of the Qatar track.

Speaking to InsideF2’s Michael McClure, Invicta Virtuosi driver Jack Doohan described the circuit as an ‘awesome track’.

The Australian added that he enjoyed a mixture of ‘old-school’ circuits on the calendar, as well as some new additions.

Championship leader Théo Pourchaire said: “I think the F2 calendar looks interesting, and every time a lot of races, a lot of great races.

“I think Qatar looks like a track where you can overtake more than Zandvoort, so it’s maybe not a bad idea, not a bad move from the F2 organisation.”

But while the drivers may be excited to take on a new circuit, Van Amersfoort Racing boss Frits van Amersfoort is less happy about it’s addition, as it comes at the expense of his team’s home race.

“It’s very disappointing,” he told InsideF2’s Michael McClure, “I was so happy to be part of the Dutch Grand Prix, and you see today how fantastic it is with all these orange people.

“It feels very, very bad, we regret it a lot.”

Zandvoort joined the F2 calendar in 2022, with Marcus Armstrong and Felipe Drugovich winning the Sprint and Feature Races respectively.

And this year saw a weekend hit by the weather, with Saturday’s Sprint Race washed out following a Red Flag, Hitech’s Isack Hadjar being credited with the win, and Trident’s Clément Novalak taking his maiden F2 win in a chaotic Feature Race.
