Ayumu Iwasa finished second in today’s FIA Formula 2 Feature Race in Monza, his sixth podium of the season so far.
Starting the race in 15th after a tricky Qualifying session, Iwasa needed strong pace in his DAMS to be able to salvage a decent result.
A string of impressive overtakes achieved him exactly that, and helped him to remain third in the championship standings with only one round remaining in Abu Dhabi at the end of the month.
He managed to stay out of trouble while Frederik Vesti, second in the drivers’ championship, made contact with Roman Stanek which saw him out of the race:
“I’m really happy with today’s race, the car had great pace and the team did a perfect job with the set-up and strategy. We had to take a risk during the pit stop, changing tyres earlier than planned, but I looked after them and made some important overtakes to clinch another podium.”
The Feature Race’s result means that second in the overall standings for Iwasa at the end of the year isn’t impossible.
Four consecutive none points finishes prior to his Monza podium put his campaign in question, but Vesti’s misfortune puts him only 12 points behind:
“Our full focus is on finishing the season in strong fashion in Abu Dhabi, we need to work together to improve our qualifying pace to give us a better chance of ending the campaign with a win. Thanks to the team for today and looking forward to the final round.”
