F2 rookie Ayumu Iwasa is looking to learn from his team as he prepares for his FIA Formula 2 debut in Bahrain this weekend.

The Red Bull Junior driver moves from Hitech Grand Prix in F3 to DAMS in F2 this year. Adapting to a new series, with new equipment and in new surroundings is a challenge, but one that he is ready to overcome with the support of his team.

When speaking to F2 media, the Japanese driver emphasised the importance of being close to the team, and has moved to live in the UK, near the Red Bull base.

“I live in Milton Keynes now so I can train a lot there, and do simulator training there. I still go to the workshop in Lemans for DAMS almost every week. The communication with them there is really important.

“DAMS has a really good relationship with its drivers, so I discuss anything with them and share my results from training with them.”

The French outfit won the Teams’ Championship in 2019, and have a wealth of knowledge and experience to draw on to help Iwasa to develop in F2. Establishing a good relationship with the team could be key to his success this year, as he taps into the team’s expertise.

Iwasa joins Roy Nissany at DAMS, who will be competing in his fourth season of Formula 2.

“The situation for me is really good, because Roy has really good experience, so I can learn a lot from him.”
