Iwasa Not Focussing on Championship Battle Until the End of the Season

Ayumu Iwasa is third in the FIA Formula 2 Championship after seven rounds in which he has achieved three wins and a pole position.

The Red Bull Junior driver will be looking to finish as high up in the standings after speculation that Nyck de Vries isn’t performing to Red Bull advisor, Helmut Marko’s high standards.

With that, a seat is expected to open up at Alpha Tauri (Red Bull’s junior team) but with Daniel Ricciardo being rumoured to replace de Vries, the pressure to perform in F2 will be exaggerated.

At the moment, Iwasa is the highest placed Red Bull Junior in the drivers’ standings but in the post-race press conference in Austria, he admitted to insideF2’s Fraser Ford that he is more focussed on performing, rather than the championship.

“I think at the end of the season, I will have to think about it a bit if I am close to P1 or leading the championship.”

“But, I think it is not good to think about it now, so I think what I need to do is to focus on my performance and to improve the overall performance with the team. I think that will be the target, because we were not p1 in qualifying. I think it is a bit too early to think for the future.”
