DAMS Ayumu Iwasa heads to Round 10 of the 2022 FIA Formula 2 Championship chasing a consecutive-wins on two fronts.
Iwasa took a Sprint Race victory for Hitech in Formula 3 last year following a post-race penalty for Lorenzo Colombo and the Japanese driver is coming into the weekend just a few days after his maiden F2 win at Circuit Paul Ricard.
Iwasa, 20, said: “I want to get a proper victory this year, so that means two victories in two weekends.”
The Red Bull Junior Team driver believes the Hungaroring layout suits him as it is “quite a technical circuit” and says the weekend’s success hinges on Qualifying on Friday.
“For me the Qualifying lap will be very important in this weekend because overtaking will be really very difficult,” Iwasa explained, adding: “I aim to get a good speed in Free Practice, to get the confidence needed for Qualifying.”
Iwasa is yet to score a Formula 2 pole position but was beaten to pole in France by Logan Sargeant by just 0.006s.
F2 rookie Iwasa is currently ninth in the Drivers’ standings, with 72-points, following his first win of the season, the third highest placed Red Bull associated driver.
Team mate Roy Nissany is 17th with 18-points while DAMS, on 90-points, are sixth in the Teams’ standings.
Felipe Drugovich of MP Motorsport leads the Driver’s table while ART Grand Prix top the Teams’ championship.
