The rise of Jack Doohan through the junior ranks in motorsport has been one of persistence, grit, and well-defined focus on long-term success.
Having been born on January 20, 2003, in Gold Coast, Australia, he emerged from behind his father, Mick Doohan a five-time MotoGP world champion to forge his way in the world of motorsport. While the career of Mick was steeped in the adrenaline world of motorcycles, Jack focused on four wheels from his earliest efforts in karting all the way to Formula 1.
His first taste of competitive racing came in 2012 when he received his first kart from none other than Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher. This early beginning in karting was a point in Doohan’s life, and going into 2015 and 2016, he won numerous national karting titles around Australia.
The success on the karting circuits set the stage for his plunge into single-seater racing as he entered the British Formula 4 Championship with TRS Arden Junior Racing Team in 2018. There, he had an outstanding performance, finishing the championship fifth with three wins and 12 podiums, almost snatching fourth place.
In 2019, he expanded his horizons, competing in the MRF Challenge, Asian Formula 3, and Euroformula Open.
His performances caught many eyes, and it was in the 2019 Formula 3 Asian Championship that he showed his true mettle, finishing as runner-up after a strong fight with his team mate Ukyo Sasahara. The experience of European series continued with his move to the F3 Championship in 2020 with HWA Racelab.
Though it was a tough season, Doohan remained resilient, and he learned some valuable things even though he did not score any points that year. The following year, Doohan joined the Trident team in Formula 3, where he made a huge leap forward.
His competitiveness and ability to perform under pressure saw him finish as the vice-champion of the 2021 season, securing three wins and several podium finishes. This success brought him into the spotlight of those in the Formula 1 paddock and marked a turning point in his career.
In 2022, Doohan made the jump to Formula 2 with Virtuosi Racing, where he impressed with three wins, six podiums, and a sixth-place finish in the standings.
He showed excellent consistency during the season; he topped it off by being on pole position and getting really good results in races to prove he was ready for his next challenge.
Doohan stayed with Virtuosi in 2023, but the incredibly competitive nature of the field meant a championship title was always just out of reach. Third place and more victories were not enough to tempt him into a third full season in the category, as he turned his full attention to his future in Formula 1.
The turning point in his career came when Jack entered the Alpine Academy in 2022. His switch to Alpine marked a new beginning because it gave him an opportunity to test Formula 1 machinery and gain experience with the team.
Doohan made his maiden Formula 1 appearance with Alpine during free practice sessions in 2023 at the Mexican and Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Time spent in the cockpit confirmed he was ready for the next step, although the 2023 season saw Alpine confirm Pierre Gasly as their full-time driver instead.
Not a bad job by Doohan, and by August 2024, Alpine confirmed that he would join the team full-time in 2025, replacing Esteban Ocon. It has been a surefooted and calculated rise to Formula 1, based on the premise that slow and steady growth will see one through.
With his maiden Formula 1 season looming, Doohan is intent on continuing his journey, knowing full well that the sport he loves will require all his dedication and skill.
The story of Jack Doohan from karting to Formula 1 is one of patience, growth, and determination. After having prepared for a drive in 2025 with Alpine, he finally looks set to leave his mark on the pinnacle of motorsport, carrying the lessons learned with him every step of the way.
