FIA Formula 2 commentator Chris McCarthy has told InsideF2 that Round 3 of the season in Saudi Arabia is a “great opportunity” for the series returning drivers to make their mark on the season.
Chris said this weekend in Jeddah could be a “pivotal weekend” in how the championship battle plays out over the rest of the campaign.
The championship is currently being led by three newcomers to the series, with Formula 3 champ, Leonardo Fornaroli, a point ahead of Bahrain Feature Race winner, Alex Dunne, and Hitech TGR’s Luke Browning.
Chris told us the likes of Victor Martins and Jak Crawford, who had been tipped to challenge for the title pre-season, need to use their experience from previous seasons to “insert themselves into the the title race”.

He said it’s a key weekend for the more experienced drivers to take advantage of that before the series returns to Europe and circuits that many of the F3 graduates are familiar with.
He added it’s vital that DAMS Lucas Oil score their first points of the season, after Crawford and Kush Maini struggled to make an impression at Round 2 in Bahrain.
The man behind the mic for F2 also highlighted former Teams champions PREMA as another team that needs to “get it together”, on a circuit where they’ve won twice before.
Chris said he’ll also be keeping a close eye on the progress of F2’s newest winner, Alex Dunne, after Irishman dominated the Feature Race in Bahrain for Rodin, thrusting himself into the title hunt.
He’s also intrigued to see if championship leader, Fornaroli, can continue his run of podium finishes.
