Josh Mason of PHM Racing shared his experiences during FIA Formula 2 post-season testing in Yas Marina and preparations for the upcoming 2024 season.

The testing period was a crucial time for Mason, allowing him to focus on different aspects of the race weekend. “It’s been a very long three days,” Mason said, highlighting the rigorous schedule he and the team have set out.

The first day was dedicated to honing qualifying skills, an area Mason identified as crucial in the championship. “For me, from only a couple of practice sessions and going into qualifying has been difficult not to have more time.” he explained.

The subsequent days of testing were spent refining race strategies, with a particular emphasis on the sprint race on the second day. Mason found this focus beneficial.

“Our race pace has always been strong vs everyone else.” The third day combined elements of both sprint and feature races, providing Mason with valuable insights into tyre management over longer durations and the intricacies of practice starts and pit stops.

Reflecting on his entry into FIA Formula 2 at Spa-Francorchamps, Mason acknowledged the steep learning curve but now feels more at ease with the car and therefore in readiness for the challenges ahead.

“I finally feel like I’m getting comfortable in the car,” he shared, though he is mindful of the impending changes with a new car next year. He believes that any experience in F2 machinery will be advantageous as he moves into 2024.

When asked about his thoughts on the new car and if it’s a positive or negative given he has finally had time to get to know this version of the F2 car. Mason sees it as a double-edged sword. “It’s a bit of both,” he commented. He anticipates that all drivers will adapt quickly, but also acknowledges that the new car might align better with his driving style than the previous generation.

“You won’t know until the flag drops in Bahrain on qualifying,” he said, expressing a mixture of anticipation and uncertainty.

As for his plans leading up to the next season, Mason’s schedule remains as demanding off the track as on it. He is currently completing his degree, with an expected finish in May next year.

“For me, it’s just going to be training and hard work,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of making the most of his opportunities in F2.

Despite the challenges, Mason’s determination and focus are clear as he prepares for his first full season in the FIA Formula 2 Championship.
