Kush Maini has driven at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in F2 and whilst racing in Formula Renault Eurocup and Formula 3. Rafael Villagómez and Joshua Dürksen have also driven at the circuit whilst competing in other series. Maini believes these drivers and other rookies should therefore be able to perform to the best of their ability this weekend.
‘’It’s a track you’re comfortable with, so for the first time in the car it’s an easy track to get to grips with’’
He had poor results in Spain last year, qualifying 14th and finishing 18th in the Sprint Race and 17th in the Feature Race. Nevertherless, Maini is aiming to improve his tyre management during the Feature Race this year.
‘’I think obviously the option doesn’t last very long so you have to really look after them in your first stint on high fuel in the Feature Race if you use that strategy. I remember last year I didn’t have any tyres left in the race, so that’s a learning point for me’’
He is excited about the possibility of overtaking during the races, in particular at Turn 1 of the track. Frederik Vesti overtook Dennis Hauger and Zane Maloney at Turn 1 during the Feature Race last year and as a result won the ‘Dallara Best Overtaking Manoeuvre’ at the Formula 2 and Formula 3 Prize Giving Ceremony last December.
‘’but I think now with the last sector how it is, it’s quite fun, with the two high speed corners out at the end it makes it quite physical as well’’
Maini is prioritizing the Feature Race this weekend since it is ‘’where the big points are’’. Performing well will allow him to reduce the gap to championship leader Paul Aron, whom he is currently almost 50 points behind in the championship.
