Last Lap Move “the best way” to win in Imola for Colapinto

Franco Colapinto scored his maiden win in the FIA Formula 2 Championship in Imola thanks to a last-gasp move on the final lap of the Sprint Race.

After a good performance in Qualifying, the Argentine driver followed race leader Paul Aron for most of the race, seemingly unable to pass until an error from the Hitech Pulse- Eight driver gave him the race-winning opportunity.

After the race, Colapinto said: “I’m extremely happy. It was a tough start to the year but I was sure we were going to turn it around soon and it’s happened very quickly.

“I’m very proud of the team who’ve done a great job and supported me through these first few races.”

The Williams junior driver made a spectacular move around the outside of Aron into the Tamburello chicane, forcing his way into the lead and edging his rival out on the exit.

He said: “To win on the last lap is just a bit nicer, and you get all the emotions in one lap – it’s the best way to do it.”

The MP Motorsport driver was involved in an incident at the race start which took five drivers out of the race, as he touched with Roman Stanek who in turn collided with Isack Hadjar.

The ripple effect forced several drivers to the grass as they took avoiding action, with Joshua Dürksen, Enzo Fittipaldi, and Dennis Hauger all crashing out and retiring.

After a chaotic start and a lengthy Safety Car period, the race settled down with the top 10 drivers locked together in a DRS train, with very few opportunities to overtake into the first chicane.

That all changed in the final laps, as tyre degradation brought errors, with Amaury Cordeel sliding wide in the final turn, letting through Zane Maloney, before Aron slipped up in similar fashion and gave Colapinto the race-winning opportunity.

He said: “It was the right time to do it, it was the only lap I had a chance into Turn 1, and I took the opportunity.”

The newly-crowned race winner will start the all-important Feature Race in P9, and will hope he can pull of more daring overtaking moves to try to follow up his Sprint Race success.
