Liam Lawson is set to make his Formula 1 weekend debut at the Belgian Grand Prix with AlphaTauri just after the summer break.
The Red Bull Junior has performed admirably in 2022 winning two Formula 2 races in Saudi Arabia and France, he currently sits eighth in the championship.
The 20-year-old has tested with AlphaTauri before at last year’s Abu Dhabi rookie test, Lawson posted the second quickest time on Day 1 ahead of Oscar Piastri and Pato O’Ward.
The AlphaTauri boss Franz Tost said at the Hungarian Grand Prix: “We plan to run Liam Lawson in FP1 in Spa.”
It has become mandatory for teams hand an FP1 session to a young driver (or drivers) a minimum of two occasions this season.
The Faenza based squad are yet to fulfil that requirement while Red Bull, Mercedes and Williams have provided Juri Vips and Nyck De Vries with opportunities in FP1.
It is yet to be confirmed who the Carlin driver will replace at Spa-Francorchamps as Formula 1 returns from it’s traditional summer break.
The three-time Formula 2 winner is yet to drive at Spa in F2 but performed well at the famous circuit in FIA F3 scoring a third place in Race 2.
