Maloney’s Double Win and What it Means For the 2024 Championship

Maloney’s Double Win and What it Means For the 2024 Championship

With his double race victory this weekend in Bahrain, Zane Maloney became the fifth driver in FIA Formula 2 history to achieve this impressive feat.

Speaking to Ariana Bravo after Saturday’s Feature Race he made sure to note Rodin’s hard work over the winter which led to his first win in the series so far:

“Coming into this weekend and getting two victories is unbelievable. It just shows the hard work of Rodin throughout the offseason. I mean, they did an unbelievable job.

“From the start of the weekend, we knew on any tyre and conditions that we were at least one of the fastest but two victories is just unbelievable.”

A rocket-like launch off the line in both races helped him to get into a strong position from Turn 2 onwards. Today, poor starts from Gabriel Bortoleto and Isack Hadjar meant that an early move into Turn 1 was possible in the Feature Race to give him the lead.

“The plan was to manage on the softs while still trying to create a gap, just to be able to have the lead when we wanted to box. And then we boxed and the Safety Car came out the next lap.

“To be honest in my mind, I thought that someone was going to get a free pitstop when we lost the lead but luckily, that wasn’t the case. Then I knew that I had the hard tyres to push as hard as I could on.”

Campos’ Pepe Martí was hot on Maloney’s tail during the second Safety Car restart which was called to recover the stricken ART of Victor Martins. Martí, just like the other 20 drivers this weekend, didn’t have an answer to Maloney’s pace around the Bahrain International Circuit.

“Of course, Pepe was really fast and the gap was pretty much the same throughout the whole race so we were still having to push hard but the team just did an unbelievable job.”

His success this weekend also puts him in a strong position early on in this year’s championship fight. Currently, his lead over Martí is 12 points. Maloney outlined the importance of this weekend for his 2024 campaign:

“[It’s] very important. I mean, last year was, in my opinion, a very bad year from my side. So to get this confidence now is a great thing. I’ve had to wait for over a year to get a victory, since F3. To get two now is amazing.”
