Victor Martins had a great FIA Formula 2 Feature Race in Barcelona on the alternate strategy.
He started the race in seventh and took the last place on the podium after a long run on the hard tyres which put him in a great position for the closing stages of the race.
He spoke to InsideF2 Editor, Jim Kimberley after the Feature Race:
“I knew on the prime [tyres] I was doing good with the team, good communication, good pace. There was a moment when my engineer told me ‘you will be fighting for a podium in the end.’”
“I was just doing my own race. Obviously when I went down the pits I saw him [Théo Pourchaire] and I just kept going and focussing forward and we go to P3.”
Although he did a great race, he didn’t think the win was possible with the number of laps available to him.
“I think Iwasa was defending really well. Maybe I had been behind for too long- one lap too much, degrading a bit too much the tyres. Obviously, if I had one more lap on Fittipaldi I would’ve tried something but it was a matter of taking the risk or not and maybe doing a mistake in trying something so P3 I’m happy with.
