Martins ‘not thinking of F1’ despite Alpine vacancy

Frenchman Victor Martins says he’s not thinking about a Formula 1 drive with Alpine despite the team having an open seat for 2025.

Martins, who finished his rookie F2 season fifth, has struggled for form in his ART Grand Prix car in 2024.

But the Alpine Academy driver says he’s still getting support from the F1 team.

Martins said: “They are supporting in these difficult moments. Let’s say they know what I have in my hands, and I  need to keep focusing on myself.”

The 23-year-old has won a race this season, even though he’s spent much of the campaign unable to trouble the top places regularly.

After winning the Sprint Race in Spain, Martins told InsideF2 that he always knew what he was capable of.

Concentrating on maximising what he has

At Silverstone, he told InsideF2’s Fraser Ford that’s he’s focussed on getting the most of out what he’s got.

“I think it is just trying to optimise it, doing the best job I can with what I have in my hands and I think the kind of result today is what I need to do,” the former F3-champion said.

He added: “When I have the car to go p2, I go p2. When I have the car to go p10, I try to do p8 or p7, try not to go too far, which can lead to mistakes, and I just try to focus on details with the team and keeping calm.”

He said Alpine are aware of the situation Martins finds himself in – but he’s not targeting a race seat with them in F1.

The Enstone-based team has retained Pierre Gasly for 2025, with current teammate Esteban Ocon departing the team.

“I am not actually thinking of Formula 1 or whatever, because I feel that is not the way to take today. I am just trying to do the best with what I have, and that is it.”

Former F2 driver Jack Doohan is widely-tipped to get the seat, but Alpine has launched a bid to recruit outgoing Ferrari F1 driver Carlos Sainz back to the team he raced for in 2017 and 2018.

While it’s unclear at this stage what Martins career path looks like, he’ll be hoping the immediate future includes fighting for a Feature Race win on Sunday at Silverstone after qualifying second for Round 8 of the season, alongside Campos driver Isack Hadjar.
