Gabriele Minì re-energised his Formula 2 title fight after a convincing win around the Hungaroring, after passing PREMA’s Sebastian Montoya.

The Italian started second for the reverse-grid race and tracked the pole-sitter closely in the opening laps, before making the decisive move on Lap 17.

From there, he never looked back, winning with a nearly four-second gap back to DAMS’ Dino Beganovic.

Sprint pole sitter Montoya was taken out of the race by championship leader Nikola Tsolov, during attempted the overtake for second place on lap 21.

It means the gap at the top of the championship is cut to 16 points, as Mini also picked up a point for the fastest lap.

Trident and Laurens Van Hoepen returned to the podium in third, with the Dutchman bouncing back from a heavy crash in Belgium last week to score his third podium of the year, and first since Mini’s previous victory in Miami.

Drama spices up sluggish sprint

Montoya had a successful launch off the line and lead into turn 1 from Minì and Tsolov, having already built a one and a half second gap by lap three.

By lap four, Minì had closed right back up to just half a second going into turn 1, attempting an overtake going into Hamilton corner, but remained behind.

Pole sitter for the feature race on Sunday, ART’s Kush Maini complained over the radio about what seemed to be the DRS train.

MP Motorsport’s Minì successfully took first place after putting pressure on Montoya for plenty of laps. This battle carried on until turn 3, but Mini maintained the lead, which resulted in him winning the race.

The biggest talking point was Tsolov’s dive on Montoya, resulting in them both being out of the race. That incident is now under investigation, which could lead to the championship leader taking a grid penalty in tomorrow’s feature race.

Further back, after the virtual safety was removed, Noel Léon closed in and overtook Joshua Duerksen on the outside of turn one. This continued down into turn three, where he seemed to push Duerksen wide, resulting in a five-second time penalty.

Invicta’s Rafael Câmara closed his gap to the championship leader again by finishing fourth, fifth was Maini, followed by his teammate Tasanapol Inthraphuvasak. Seventh was Duerksen, and the final point was taken by Martinius Stenshorne. Léon dropped to ninth after his penalty.

Câmara will have another chance to close the gap on Tsolov in Sunday’s Feature Race, which he will start from the front row, with Kush Maini on pole position. The race starts at 10:25 am UK time Sunday.
