Ralph Boschung took his first podium of this year’s FIA Formula 2 Championship in Imola’s Feature Race, but was frustrated to lose second place after a miscommunication with his team, finishing behind Enzo Fittipaldi and Théo Pourchaire.
Boschung was fighting for the podium places throughout the Feature Race, in a battle that became increasingly tense in the closing laps. Sitting second late on in the race, he was passed by Logan Sargeant before the American ran wide and fell back down the order. The Swiss driver was under pressure yet again, and was passed by Fittipaldi, who would retain P2.
Speaking in the post-race press conference, Ralph explained how the final stages of the race failed to go his way:
“I was a little bit confused to be honest because I couldn’t believe Fittipaldi was actually fighting for the podium! I thought that he still had to pit and then he passed me and I was like ‘I’m just going to save tyres and cruise’ but he was second!
“I got confused there which was my mistake, because my engineer told me on the radio but I couldn’t hear very clearly.”
Despite scoring good results and performing well, the Campos Racing driver still felt there was room for improvement in his driving:
“The rear right was overheating, I think my driving wasn’t very good, so I’m not entirely happy about that.”
His race was defined by his excellent start, which saw him into second place which he retained for the majority of the race. That start was no fluke, as he revealed in his post-race comments:
“The start was amazing. I actually got the lead for a couple of metres, and then Roy actually got a better start and I couldn’t defend from him.
“Campos and I have done a pretty good job, because we have found a little trick that makes the starts pretty good, so I welcome you guys [Théo Pourchaire and Enzo Fittipaldi] to try and find it out! We are just a rocket. I’m enjoying the trick, let’s see if you guys find it out!”
