We had the pleasure of speaking with Jack Doohan’s father, motorcycle racing legend and winner of five consecutive 500cc World Championships Mick Doohan.
We chatted post Feature Race about his son and his own feelings about Jack’s F2 career so far.
After witnessing his son scoring his maiden win in F2 on Saturday, Mick gave us a quick impression of Jack’s Feature Race, in which he concluded in ninth position.
“Luck, which you need a little bit of, has not really fallen in place for Jack at the moment, but the speed is there”, added Doohan senior.
When commenting on his son’s race, “We were hoping for more of the British summer weather” confessed Mick, as heavy rain surprisingly hit the track, leaving Jack’s team, Virtuosi Racing, ‘hoping for a safety car, which never came’.
A problematic pit stop during Sunday’s race, caused the young Alpine academy driver to lose some time and drop further down in the field, on a race that, ‘could have ended in fifth position’.
The Australian F2-rookie, currently placed in 8th position within the Drivers’ Championship, has been making good ground this season, bringing home points most weekends. According to father Mick, Jack’s, ‘enjoying F2 and is remaining positive’.
Finally, Mick enthusiastically welcomed the newly added Australian Grand Prix into the F2 Championship’s calendar, expressing his hopes to see other Australian talents joining not only the Formula 2 grid but also the F3 grid very soon.
