New F2 Weekend format for 2021

Formula 2 announced today how the new race weekend will look for 2021 which will now include two sprint races instead of one.

Although practice and qualifying will remain on Friday and last thirty minutes, Saturday will now feature two Sprint races lasting forty-five minutes and will include two reversed grid formats for the top 10 drivers.

Qualifying times will now count for Sunday’s Feature race which will last an hour although that is surplus to changes for rounds such as Monaco and Baku.

The point system will remain unchanged with four for pole position, the top eight for the Sprint and the top ten for the Feature race.

Drivers and teams will get an extra set of tires as this will go up from six to five which includes four sets of prime rubber and two sets of options.

Formula 2 CEO Bruno Michel spoke of the new regulations and hoped that next year’s grid will showcase their talents to the Formula 1 paddock.

“I am pleased to reveal the changes to our sporting regulations which have been approved by the World Motor Sport Council.

“It’s fantastic to be able to move the Feature Race to Sunday which is the day of the Formula 1 Grand Prix. It will enhance the show for the fans and will make it even more special.

“Having two reverse grids on Saturday will spice up the championship even further. We have seen already how entertaining these races are. It should also allow more drivers to showcase their skills in front of the Formula 1 paddock and the rest of the world.”

The new regulations will be first tried out at the Bahrain round of the series set to be held on the 26th-28th March.
