The penultimate FIA Formula 2 race weekend is in full swing at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, and Oscar Piastri sits comfortably at the top of the standings.
His closest rival for the majority of the season, Guanyu Zhou, has lost valuable points this weekend.
The Australian stretches his lead from the chasing pack, but a determined Robert Shwartzman, isn’t giving up on his own charge for the winner’s trophy, as he slots into second place in the driver standings.
Piastri stated: “It means a lot try and win the Drivers’ Championship. We’re all here to win of course, it’s what we’re all aiming for.”
Last season’s Formula 3 Champion, is having a dream year in F2. Partly thanks to the PREMA team, who is well on their way to a second consecutive team championship.
Piastri stated that contributing to the team’s win is a, “just reward” for PREMA, because of the great car they’ve given both himself, and teammate, Shwartzman, all season.
“I think both Robert and I have worked with the team a lot, especially at the beginning of the year in testing, to improve the package from last year.
“In qualifying we’ve made a very big step on that.”
With a glint in his eye, Piastri summarised what it would mean to do the ‘double’:
“It would be very nice to get the Team’s Championship and I’m sure it will make all the bosses happy. I also want to win the Drivers’ Championship for myself as I guess I’m a racing driver and I’m a bit selfish. So, there you go.”
