PREMAPREMA Finish 1-2 In A Rainy Qualifying

PREMA finish 1-2 with drivers Oliver Bearman and Frederik Vesti as they become the only two cars in the Qualifying session to complete a lap without the issue of wet weather conditions.

Formula 2 Qualifying at Spa-Francorchamps began with only seven minutes until an expected rain shower. The dry line throughout the track was only a car width wide but drivers began to head out to put in a lap time on slick tyres.

As Drivers’ Championship leader Vesti crossed the line to begin his first flying lap, the yellow flags were waved, swiftly followed by a red flag.

These were for PHM driver Joshua Mason who races in F2 for the first time this weekend in replacement of Brad Benavides. Mason was unable to restart the car and continue to participate in the session.

PREMA timed their laps well as both Bearman and Vesti exchanged purple sectors to finish 1-2 just as the rain began to fall on the field behind. The lap times for the cars behind progressively got slower as the rain fell harder and the swap to wet tyres was necessary.

Juan Manuel Correa had his time deleted, being one of four cars without a lap time at the half way mark of the session. He was then placed under investigation for blocking Jack Doohan, being called to the stewards after the session.

For the second half of the session, no cars were seen on track as no improvements were to be made in lap time and track conditions were looking to stay the same. The session finished this way, in the pit lane with Bearman taking his third Formula 2 pole position.

Cordeel, Maini, Correa and Mason will all report to the stewards to be granted permission to run in both the Feature and Sprint Race after not putting in a lap time.

Jehan Daruvala will take reverse grid pole alongside Richard Verschoor in the Feature Race on Saturday when Formula 2 returns for Round 11 of the 2023 season.
