PREMA experienced a great qualifying session in Sochi for the 10th round of the Formula 2 Championship this weekend.
Both Mick Schumacher and Robert Shwartzman have the third and seventh fastest lap times in qualifying respectively.
Mick Schumacher, who wants to keep his lead in the driver standings, improved on his second set of tyres and took third in a close session at the Sochi circuit.
The German is tantalisingly close to the Formula 2 Drivers’ Championship title.
Schumacher: “We can be completely satisfied with third place. In my last attempt, I managed to improve in all three sectors, as I felt much more comfortable with the second set of tyres than the first. The Carlin boys looked very strong today, but we want to make their lives as hard as possible tomorrow. Maybe it could be an advantage to start on the clean side.”
Robert Shwartzman had to settle for seventh. He was competitive from the beginning of the session in Sochi and showed great potential.
However, the Russian couldn’t pull it all together when it mattered the most and will start from the fourth row of the grid for the Feature Race tomorrow.
Shwartzman: “The potential today was quite good, but we didn’t manage to put it all together in the end. I made a couple of small mistakes, and we ended up a bit off from P1. Not exactly the qualifying I was hoping for. We need to do a good start from P7 and a good race, and hopefully, we will get a good result too because the pace is definitely there.”
Sochi delivers both challenging and unexpected races, so nothing is guaranteed when it comes to potential results throughout the weekend.
